Dialtone

A dial tone is a telephony signal of a low, steady tone in a telephone receiver indicating that a number may be dialed. It indicates that the telephone exchange is working. The tone stops when the first numeral is dialed. If no digits are forthcoming, the permanent signal procedure is invoked, which results in a special tone or Intercept message that just a noise to gain your attention.
